Description: Award-winning author, folklorist and university instructor Norine Dresser specializes in multicultural manners. In this video, she talks about how body language varies across cultures. As young children, we learn how to read body language based on our own society's interpretation of non-verbal communication. When my family lived in Indonesia in the late '70s, our housekeeper quit because she thought my mother wok up angry every day. Because my mother was very pregnant at the time, she would walk down the stairs with her hands on her hips to support her lower back. This gesture is a sign of anger in Indonesia.
